01 THE LEGEND
BEFORE THE MEME,
THERE WAS A LEGEND.
In a quiet corner of Wakayama, Japan, a small rural railway was running out of road. Stations were unstaffed. Riders were disappearing. The line was fading toward the end of the timetable.
Then somebody gave the job to a cat.
Her name was Tama — a calico who already lived at Kishi Station on the Kishigawa Line. In January 2007 she was formally appointed stationmaster, given a custom cap, and stationed at the gate to greet passengers. It was meant as a small local gesture.
It became a phenomenon. Travellers rode the line just to meet her. News crews came from around the world. A cat-shaped train ran the route. A station was rebuilt in her honour. A railway that had been written off became a destination — and Tama became one of the most beloved railway figures on earth.
She served until her death in 2015, and was honoured with the title of honorary eternal stationmaster.
One cat. One cap. One railway that refused to close.
